NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP) AND TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS.

There is a bigh relation between Neuro Linguistic Programing (NLP) and the teaching-learning process, In this case, Zorica Antić from Faculty of Medicine, Niš, SerbiaBriefly, give us some characteristics of NLP approach to teaching and learning.

• The teacher- learner relationship is a cybernetic loop, a dynamic process in which meaning is constructed through reciprocal feedback; not a transmission of information from one individual to another, separate, individual.
• People act according to the way they understand and represent the world, not according to the way the world 'is'.
• Of prime interest in NLP are the ways in which people represent the world internally, through sensory imagery (principally visual, auditory and kinaesthetic) and language.
• A learner's internal representations and processing are reflected, in various ways, in their language- and their external behavior.
• Skills, beliefs and behaviours are all learnt.
• An individual's capacity to learn is influenced strongly by their neuro-physiological 'state', and by their beliefs about learning and about themselves.
• Such modification happens through communication between teacher and learner, which takes place through verbal and non-verbal channels, both consciously and unconsciously. The functioning of which human beings are conscious, and which can be controlled consciously, represents only a small proportion of total functioning.
• All communication potentially influences leaning. Crucially, teachers' language and behaviour influence learners on at least two levels simultaneously; both their understanding of the topic in question, and their beliefs about the world, including about learning.

In essence, teaching is a process of (a) creating 'states' that are conducive to learning; and (b) facilitating learners' exploration and/or enhancement of their internal representations; (c) to lead towards the desired goal or outcome of the context.
If we as teachers take into account those principles, our class environment would change and we would work on both the academic and the affective part of our students.

  1. I believe in the power of the word and what it represents as a representation of the way we concieve the world. I agee with you that communication is an effective way to go beyond in students´ life and modify their assumptions and beliefs. NLP demands discipline and conviction.
The question would be, how much are we prepared to carry out NLP in class?

  2. Yes, Tryny. That is a good quetion every teacher might formulate. For that reason I consider that some courses not only are important to help our students but ourselves. and NLP is one of them.

  3. I think that the new trends of the modern world can be applied in education, and the NLP is a good example. However, first of all, teachers need to learn a lot about this interesting topic in order to involve it inside our classrooms. I agree with the idea that most of people can learn a language or whatever thing through links between the reality and the object of study...

  4. It is absolutely fascinating how this NLP works. It would be very interesting to go in deep, because as you have said, it helps not only us but also our students. We should find sometime to talk about it, and you Carlos, should share some of your knowledge and experiences with us.

  5. I consider, it up to us to encourage them to overcome whatever obstacles that can appear, in the learning process, which sometimes affect students beliefs and uncourage them, sometimes we pu them into a bottle without way of escape, we think that they are not able to do many things that we see imposible for them, so many times it is not the students mind who affects the students, sometimes we have the fault.

  6. Good afternoon my partners…
Firstly, I want to congratulate Carlitos for this interesting topic he shared with us, but as Patty said,it would be interesting to go in deep. And secondly, I agree with your comments, for example, Tryni’s question is very good and as Carlos said we might formulate it to ourselves and If there isn’t a formal course where we can learnt about this topic or any other we still have valuable tools like continue researching, reading and why not sharing important information and keeping in touch through this blog (that’s why we are learning how to use technology not only for our students but for ourselves). So, if we want to continue moving and keeping up dated into this contemporary trends as Hugo said we need to learn not only about topics but change our behavior in order to have a good rapport with our students, because we, teacher-learners are part of the LLT process (Language learning teaching) and this is one of the principles which affects directly our classroom environment and the affective part of our pupils (motivation). So, let’s be in touch and be aware that we are almost finishing something that doesn’t have and end, but it’s just another starting point in our careers as language educators. Nancy

  7. I completetely agree with this theory, I had the opportunity to read about it, and It´sN amazing all kind of benefits that a teacher or a person can get througH this method, It´s like born again in your mind, trying ro do or making plans about what things you want to achieve, in few words "positive attitude" influences Ss progress or process because you are the only one that can influence in a positive or negative way. We are teachers, masters in this cognitive process, we have the tools , so we only need to know how to use it.

  8. So, it´s our duty to try to take advantage of NLP in our teaching work. I think this is an amazing topic that we need to deeper and it can be very useful in order to know better our students and identify the ways they learn faster.

  9. I attended a presentation of Dr.Liliana Zambrano about neuro linguistic programing and coaching in educational field. In that opportunity Dr.Zambrano explained the benefits of NLP in learning process -use of multiple intelligences and verbal language-. Also she said that NLP is a process of model and "model is coaching" to create new options like the possibility to model the behaviour of people in order to learn and incorporate affective skill or to act as model of themselves to reproduce the own excellence shown in a previous situation. I think we are open-minded teachers for that reason we can experiment new ways to help our students to be good as students and as persons. 10. One way of going deeper in the topic would be through the links that our partners have suggested. I´d like to refer to Nancy´s comment. I agree that the speace we have created through this blog does not have to end just because the module finishes. It would be good to keep our reflections going.

    Congrats for your participation
