Nowadays, the process of learning in educative institutions has been integrating new technologies like software, web pages, and social pages as virtual and educative platforms that are other tools in class to strengthen system of education.
Technologies of the Information and communication are useful tools in the current academic environments, they can allow teachers to create new sources, and also, they are necessary to prepare young people to play full roles in modern society.
Some of the helpful software that we can involve in our classes is The Hot Potatoes that is a dynamic tool to create interactive Web-based teaching exercises. This includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is freeware, and you may use it for any purpose or project you like.

· The JQuiz program creates question-based quizzes. Questions can be of four different types, including multiple-choice and short-answer. Specific feedback can be provided both for right answers and predicted wrong answers or distractors.
· The JCloze program creates gap-fill exercises. Unlimited correct answers can be specified for each gap, and the student can ask for a hint and see a letter of the correct answer.
· The JCross program creates crossword puzzles which can be completed online. You can use a grid of virtually any size. As in JQuiz and JCloze, a hint button allows the student to request a free letter if help is needed.
· The JMix program creates jumbled-sentence exercises.
· The JMatch program creates matching or ordering exercises. A list of fixed items appears on the left (these can be pictures or text), with jumbled items on the right.

Martha I think you wrote a good summary about Hot Potatoes software. I agree with you when you say nowdays educative institutions have technological tools to strengthen system of education. I consider teachers need a close relationship with computers and technology to change the traditional "face" of classes.Today we have "cyberstudents" and we know they dislike chalk, board, paper and pencil.For that reason ICTs are fundamental in the academical process in order to motivate students to continue in the educational system.
ReplyDeleteI feel the more tools you have in order to help your students the better. Hot Potatoes is a very dinamic way of getting your students into the on line games. Not only are they fun but they provie an abundunt source of knowledge. Since my institution has a limited amount of computers it will be a bit difficult to get all my students to work at the same time, but we are working on getting more computers so all of my students can benefit from the new technology and in this way better their current learning process. ReplyDeleteI think that the activities developed with this type of programs can become a useful and worthy tool inside our classrooms. As we could see, it doesn´t demand a lot of effort, so we just need to invest some time on designing the activities and I am sure the students are going to enjoy and take advantage of them...

ReplyDeleteWell, as we have mentioned until now, we have to make some changes and transformation in our LT, and this tool provoke this change, it is very worthy because in places where internet has problems of connecting we can use it witout any problem and excuse, but I am strongly sure that not just hot potatoes can provide new ways of teaching, I ask this question. Have you cared about new sofware in this part of the process and not just Consuelo sofware knowledge. well I mean what other sofware like this do you Know, remember the diversification is an strong point in this field. bye
I´d like to refer to Hugo's comment about this software not demanding a lot of effort. I´d rather say it does not demand a lot of technical knowledge. If we want to design excellent activities for our learners, we "do" need to put some effort on it.

ReplyDeleteUsing technology in our clases is just a way to speak the same language of our students, I mean, they sometimes know more about it that us. so, if we are teaching a language, which is being demanded all arround the world, by using old technichs with old technology, how can we demand our students to be more interesting in our classes. they are 21th century students, why are we using 19th century educational technics
