Envisioning the idea about how I will do in class

All English teachers have to demonstrate their commitment to provide effective teaching; lesson planning has an important part to play in this process.

What is a lesson plan?

Lesson planning is an exercise that permits teachers to envision the idea about how they will do things in class. It is an act of ethic and responsibility from the teacher to the institution he/she works at and the students.
I could identify three stages in this process. Firstly, there is a moment of thinking and doing by the teacher, it means writing down the aims which requires a little more thought; choose the topic or language, design materials and organize the stages to develop in class. In this stage it is of crucial importance that teacher knows students´ characteristics, weakness and fortress. Knowing students and assumed knowledge help teacher to propose coherent and feasible aims.

Secondly, this is the time of executing the plan, thinking and doing by teacher and students, interact with our students and live the language in the classroom.

Thirdly, after doing, here we have to go back to analyze what went well, what did not, and what could be changed for next class. Although all three stages are so important, I consider that the third one is a chance we have for professional development.

It would be interesting to know how you conceived lesson planning in your pedagogical practice and if you agree with me that the third stage is a point of departure to reflect on our practice and think ways of being better.

  1. Well, I think planning is very important in order for teachers to develop a great work in the classroom; but I am sure that the lesson plan is just a guide, and sometimes it can´t be carried out according to how it was designed. On the other hand, I agree with you Trinidad, the third step is the most important, because the evaluation of what we do is a key factor to improve our daily performance.

  2. well, I agree tha most of the things have to be planing but sometimes you have to change things in the class, probably everything that you planned did not work as you expected,in addiction to the thir part related to evaluation, let me say that evaluation is the most important steps in the process, what went righ or well, it can help to improve and and change my mind in terms of materials, pedagogical practice and so on.

  3. When a teacher plans his or her classes s/he has a base, and it is known that s/he is taking his students’ learning needs. As some of my classmates have said, planning does not mean you have to follow strictly what you have planned, but you can change some things on the way. The important here is to be flexible and take into account the students’ learning needs and in some way your own needs too.

  4. All you have said is absolutely true. I just want to reflect on something. We know that all the steps are really important, and that evaluation has to be presented in all the process as it is the way we can "correct" or "change" things during the process. But, do we really do it? do we really have time to evaluate in deep our classes? or it is just a superficial evaluation about what was right or wrong in a moment or activity in the class?

  5. Well, lesson plan as most of you have mentioned, it`s a guide that allow us to be aware of whole process during our class. It help us to organize carrefully what is going to be taught and also how, it helps to prepare classes regarding students`needs and also to give solutions all problems we have anticipated. Although, lesson plan is a great tool to get succesful classes, it is just a starting point that requires other aspects to achieve that aim.
Furtheremore, is necessary not only to know in a superficial or deep way what was rigth or what was wrong in what we did, but the most important is to take an action plan. No just thinking but acting. Here is where the third step that you have mentioned as the most important works.

  6. When I design a lesson plan, I always think of my students needs´,sources and their real context. taking into account these aspects, the lesson plan is just a guide to be ordered in the development of the class, although the stages could change in every moment.Every thing depends of motivation, attitude and the moment. So, As teachers, we have to be prepared for each situation. For the other hand, a self evaluation about our work is an important aspect to be reflectives and flexibles.

  7. Edit
I agree with my partners´ ideas about lesson plans, and I want to say that lesson plans are useful for teachers because when we find materials and plan activities and time, we can have organized classes, however, we know there are situations in which we have to change some things because maybe at the moment they do not work as we expected.
Another important thing, is that teachers must do and evaluation of the activities during and at the end of the class. This is relevnt to know pros and cons.
